In my last project I faced a situation where the customer asked me about the best option for a particular topic and this time my answer had to be “it depends”. As a consultant, my duty was to provide two different options (with their corresponding pros and cons) but I could not make a decision on this, since the answer was highly dependent on the composition of IT service providers in different areas and also their road map.
Dealing with personal files has become a harder task with the latest integrated platforms. Higher centralized security together with the presence of web-based tools has reduced the amount of control that users have over the information.
In order to give some power back to users, SAP BusinessObjects has provided rich client tools that enable users to access some of their personal files. However this feature is limited to excel and text formats and causes the corporation to lose control of the files inventory because users are then able to store files in their own machine.
For those companies who wish to have a tight administrative control on their content but at the same time provide quick access to personal files such as text, Excel or even through free hand SQL’s (FHS) , the concept of Universes on top of personal data might be a good solution.
In this blog post I will explain some tips that I learned while integrating SAP BusinessObjects Universe Designer/Infoview with SAP BW.
For the most part, the steps should be simple and quite standard (unless you face some unexpected issues).
First of all you need to install the platform and the integration kit for SAP. At the end of this process you will see that you can create universes on top of BW cubes or BW queries. You can easily publish the universe and retrieve your data in a report.
